Project: Development of Highly Qualified Researchers
Updated: May 15, 2004Investigator:
Matthew H. Bakke, Ph.D.
Purpose of this Project:
To contribute to the education and training of new, highly-qualified researchers through clinical and laboratory research experience.
Project Description:
The development of highly qualified researchers will be facilitated in three ways: coursework; practica and internships; and the development of professional writing, presentation, and teaching skills.
- Coursework: many of our investigators are faculty members in their respective Departments of Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences at Gallaudet University and at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. These investigators will incorporate discussions of outcomes, progress and findings into graduate coursework, involve doctoral students in research-related problem solving, and integrate state-of-the-art techniques and technologies gained from working on RERC projects.
- Practica and Internships: doctoral students, by virtue of internships and research assistantships, will develop hands-on experience under the mentorship of project investigators. They will assist with many of the RERC projects and will have opportunities to design individual research projects as natural 'offshoots' of their RERC work.
- Professional Writing, Presentation, and Teaching Skills: Doctoral students will also be able to develop professional writing and presentation skills by assisting in the development and dissemination of research reports, and articles for submission to professional journals and conference proceedings. In addition, they will assist in the development of the Peer Mentoring Certification module of CEDAR, and be given opportunities to teach course modules as appropriate.
