Adults with Tinnitus to Participate in Hearing Research Study

Goals of the study:

Tinnitus is a sensation of sound in one or both ears or in the head in the absence of external sound. The sound is commonly described as a ringing, roaring, clicking or hissing sound and is heard often or all the time. The goals of the study are to investigate the role of the inner ear, specifically the cochlea, in the origin of tinnitus and develop improved methods in evaluating tinnitus. The study will provide increased understanding about the underlying pathology of tinnitus and aid in enhanced diagnosis and treatment strategies of tinnitus. 

Subject inclusion criteria:

Subjects who are 18 years and older and with a

1. Complaint of tinnitus but NO complaint of hearing loss OR
2. Complaint of tinnitus with a very mild hearing loss

may be eligible to participate in the research study and can earn $10.00 per hour.

Task:

All subjects will have a complete hearing evaluation and will be asked to sit in a quiet room with a small probe placed in the ear canal. Most of the time subjects will be asked to sit quietly and listen to sounds. At times, subjects will have to press a button to indicate when the sounds were heard or make other judgments about the sounds.

The entire experiment consists of two parts and each part may last for three hours. Subjects may choose to complete the entire experiment in a single or multiple visits.
