ParticipantsChildren with Normal Hearing needed to Participate in Study on Classroom Acoustics
Testing: Your child will be asked to name a series of pictures and/or point to pictures that are named by the tester. Your child will also listen to words from recordings made in classrooms, which will be played through headphones, and he/she will repeat the words. All of the data for the study will be collected in a single, two-hour session. Benefits of Your Child's Participation: Participation of your child will contribute towards a better understanding of requirements for designing classrooms for children of different ages. Compensation: Your child or family (depending on your preference) will be compensated for your time and will be reimbursed for travel expenses (roundtrip subway or bus fare). Your child will also receive a “prize” at the end of the session. Summary: We know that poor classroom acoustics can interfere with the ability to hear and understand speech. Very little information is available on how classroom acoustics affect the hearing of speech by young children. We are examining children’s ability to hear speech recorded in typical classroom environments. The information collected in this study will be used to help improve classroom acoustic conditions for children of different ages.
