BIOGRAPHY AND RERC AFFILIATION

I am serving as a consultant to the study “Electromagnetic Interference with Cochlear Implants and Hearing Aids”.  One part of the study concerns evaluating the tolerance of cochlear implant users to various audio frequency interferences that they may experience when attempting to communicate with wireless devices such as cellphones and cordless phones.  The results will be compared to a study that I and  co-investigator Linda Kozma-Spytek were involved with previously that examined similar questions in relation to hearing aid users.  A second part of the study involves a closer examination of the coupling of radio frequency interference from wireless devices to hearing aids and cochlear implants and the correlations obtainable to standardized methods of measuring the radio frequency emissions of wireless devices and the radio frequency interference immunity of hearing aids and cochlear implants.

NOTABLE PROJECTS

  • Thirteen patents held, six applications pending.
  • Significant contribution to several standards:
    • ANSI/TIA-1083 (2007) Telephone Terminal Equipment – Handset Magnetic Measurement Procedures and Performance Requirements
    • ANSI C63.19 (2007) Methods of Measurement of Compatibility between Wireless Communications Devices and Hearing Aids
    • ANSI S3.35-1985 (2002) revision for directivity index measurement of head-mounted hearing aid microphones
    • Telephone Industry Association Portable Phone to Vehicle Interface Standard (1998)
